Surface mounted tactile paving kit designed for use on a variety of surfaces including steel, concrete, ceramic, asphalt and even wood. Wherever you need to install tactile paving in a small area, this kit provides everything that you need. The design of the tiles makes them easy to shape or cut to follow ramps or kerb lines or to shape around manhole covers or access hatches. They are durable, hard wearing and manufactured from a composite of resin and stone.

Within this kit you will find adhesive and 10 tactile paving tiles which can be installed in less than two hours. The quick and easy installation process reduces disruption to pedestrians or downtime for your business. It has so many different uses from built up environments through to highways and rail stations, offering a complete safety solution. Most importantly, the paving is completely anti slip with a PTV level of 65. Controlled and Uncontrolled Crossing Tactiles

·    The purpose of these blister surface tactiles is to provide a warning to differentiate between where a footway ends, and where a carriageway begins.

·    Red should be used at Controlled Crossings Only and Stone should be used at Uncontrolled Crossings Only.

·    Controlled Applications (On-street): Zebras – Pelicans – Puffins – Toucans – Traffic signals with pedestrian phases.

·    Uncontrolled Applications (On-street): Side road crossings – Busy crossovers (vehicle crossings) – Crossings away from junctions – Kerb to kerb flat road humps – Signal controlled junctions without pedestrian phases (traffic lights)

Corduroy Tactile

·    The purpose of the corduroy surface is to provide a warning to the presence of hazards, such as stairs, level crossings or the approach to on-street light rapid transit (LRT) platforms. Consisting of rows of parallel half-round bars, it conveys the message “hazard, proceed with caution”.

·    Applications: Tops and bottom of stairs – Foot of a ramp to an on-street rapid transit (LRT) platform, but not at any other ramps – Level crossing – Where a footway/footpath joins a shared route.

Rail Platform Edge Tactile

·    This design has flat topped domes set in evenly spaced rows parallel to the direction of travel along the platform. The offset of the domes indicates the direction of travel to the train. Used adjacent to safe carriageway crossings, the surface can be any colour other than red, but should provide a good contrast with the surrounding area to assist partially sighted people.

LRT Platform Edge Tactile

·    The purpose of the on-street surface is to raise awareness for visually impaired people that are nearing the edge of an on-street LRT platform. The profile of this warning surface consists of rows of ‘Lozenge’ shapes.

The kit has been designed to make the installation process as quick and simple as possible. The surface mounted tactile paving tiles are secured in place using an Epoxy adhesive which is supplied with the tiles as part of the kit.

Surface Preparation

The installation process can only begin once the surface has been sufficiently prepared. Firstly, make sure that it is dry, clean and free from any debris, cement or grit. Where the existing surface is damaged this should be patch repaired with a suitable product. The surface should be reasonably smooth and even before you start to install the tiles.

The next step is to dry fit all of the tiles to the required area to ensure that they fit freely, and they are flat to the surface. If necessary, some of the tiles may need to be cut to fit into a particular area. Cut the tiles to shape before you apply the adhesive. The best tool to use for cutting the tiles is a 115mm angle grinder with a diamond or abrasive cutting disc.

Mixing the Adhesive

Add the liquid hardener to the base material and mix properly using a mixing paddle attached to an electric drill. Pay particular attention to the base of the tub and the edges to ensure that all of the product is properly mixed. It is important that you use a drill to complete the mixing process because mixing with a stick by hand will not achieve the consistency that you need. After the adhesive is properly mixed, it will start to cure within a few minutes. To prevent this, remove the mix from the tub and spread across the work site to achieve a longer working time. Depending on the temperature, this can be anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

Application

Place the tiles into the required position. Carefully apply the adhesive to the surface using a serrated float. The adhesive is enough to cover 1.6 square meters. Take each tile and apply them to the adhesive, slightly rolling them from one edge to expel any air that may be trapped underneath. Use a wheel roller and work from the centre of the tile, moving in an outward direction, pressing gently over the entire surface to ensure that the tile is properly bedded in, focusing particularly on the edges and corners of the tiles. To finish, kiln dried sand should be sprinkled over, ideally the same colour as the tiles. Apply this sand while the adhesive is still wet and then wait until it is dry before sweeping away the excess sand. If there is any excess adhesive on the tiles, gently remove with a scraper and you can use white spirits to lift any residue.
